"Now the enemy is just floating in the ether"

Ralph Fiennes has disclosed an early idea for the 24th James Bond film SPECTRE, which would've revealed M as James Bond's arguably most famous adversary, Blofeld.

Ralph is the fourth incarnation of MI6's first in command, following in the footsteps of Bernard Lee, Robert Brown, and Dame Judi Dench.

"I think I can say now that I had to fight off an attempt by Sam to make M a villain", Ralph explained.

"I said I don't want to play M, and then you turn around and make him the bad guy. M is never the bad guy. So I had to have some pretty intense discussions with Sam saying, 'This is not fine with me' It was like he was Blofeld or something, but that was a red line".

The role eventually went to Austrian-German actor Christoph Waltz in the much-maligned film that included the much-maligned Bond/Blofeld foster brother storyline.

Even Christoph himself criticised the film and his performance:

"I cannot claim that I've really nailed Blofeld," he said. "Overall, it held water and was okay, but it wasn't what I've been looking for. I was searching for more inspiration. An actor can only be really good when there are shared possibilities".

SPECTRE is not a fan favourite, but we'll leave it up to you to decide if this plot twist would've made it better.
