Stalker who targeted Barbara Broccoli given indefinite hospital order

A stalker has been handed an indefinite hospital order after targeting Barbara Broccoli for ten years.

Daniel Wilson, 37, "forced" Ms Broccoli to sell her family home of 20 years after breaking into it in 2016. Only her closest friends now know where she lives.

Her victim impact statement was read to Southwark Crown Court.

On Valentine's Day 2025, Wilson left several threatening voicemails. He told her, "I've got murder on my mind". This breached a restraining order, the court heard.

He admitted stalking Ms Broccoli from 2022 to 2025, which caused serious alarm or distress.

He also admitted two charges of breaching a ban on contacting her. The ban was first imposed in 2017.

Wilson, from Lambeth in south London, also pleaded guilty at Inner London Crown Court. He admitted affray and criminal damage.

In 2023, he used a hammer to smash car and hospital windows, causing £8,837 worth of damage.

Wilson was handed an indefinite Section 37 hospital order with a Section 41 restriction. The orders for each charge will be served concurrently.

Judge Christopher Hehir also issued a deprivation order for the hammer Wilson used in 2023.

Ms Broccoli's son attended the same sixth-form college as Wilson, but their friendship ended in 2009.

Wilson then developed an "enduring fixation" with Ms Broccoli, which included "grandiose thoughts".

He believed she owed him money for a bronze bust of her father, Albert "Cubby" Broccoli. 

The obsession led Wilson to break into Ms Broccoli's London home in 2016. He caused "a large amount of damage", the judge said.

Two of Ms Broccoli's friends were inside at the time. They had to "barricade themselves in a bedroom".

Wilson "barricaded himself in the house" before police arrived, the judge added. Ms Broccoli was not at home at the time.

"I'm in constant fear for my personal safety, always on edge and looking over my shoulder", Ms Broccoli told the court.

Wilson still experiences delusions about her, which became apparent during the hearing.

His behaviour prompted the judge to cut his video link from Wandsworth Prison.

Wilson interrupted the judge's sentencing remarks.

"What about the sculpture, Your Honour? What about the bronze sculpture? Let's cut the sh*t, mate. I made Barbara a sculpture. I gave a bronze sculpture to Barbara. She didn't pay for it".

He then asked, "How is that a delusion?" before the video link was terminated.

Prosecutor Arabella MacDonald said Wilson sent hundreds of WhatsApp messages, texts, emails and voicemails. Their content ranged from "strange to sexual to threatening".

Two expert witnesses assessed Wilson's psychiatric condition. They disagreed over whether he has bipolar affective disorder or schizoaffective disorder.

One told the court there was a "hair's breadth" between the diagnoses. The doctors agreed that both conditions could be treated in the same way.

The court heard that Wilson's condition had been exacerbated by his use of cannabis and crystal methamphetamine.
